Western took a trek to the bay area this past weekend with a pair of games against San Jose State, hoping to build on a strong start to the season. The Spartans had other plans.

A goaltender duel ensued Friday night, as Edvin Sanders impressed with a 35-plus save performance. But Spartans’ netminder Nick Checklenis chose to one-up Sanders, stopping all 40 of the Vikings’ shots-on-goal, on the way to a 3-0 shutout.

Saturday saw similar offensive struggles to the previous night, with the Spartans putting up six-unanswered goals to start the game. Western did have plenty of chances to capitalize in the first period, with six powerplay opportunities, but Checklenis was solid once more for the San Jose State.

Western attempted to rally with a solid second-half of the game, including Bret Brumbaugh and Aidan Hsuan each tallying their third goals of the year. But it wasn’t enough yet again, falling 6-2.

The Vikings’ are back at Bellingham Sportsplex this weekend, as the cross-state rivals Eastern Washington Eagles come to town. Game time is set for 10:30pm both Friday and Saturday.

General Admittance: $5.00, Students with I.D.: $2.00 (per game)
